Nobuyuki Tamaoki
was born in
Japan
in 1959. In 1982 he graduated from
Chiba
University
. After working
at the Toyobo Co. research center, he commenced his doctoral studies in 1989
with Professor Tsuguo Yamaoka at
Chiba
University
, where he was
awarded his Ph.D in 1992 for work on the photochromism of macrocyclic
azobenzene derivatives. In 1992, he joined the Research Institute for Polymers
and Textiles (now National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and
Technology) where he was a group leader from April 2000 to September 2008. In
October 2008 he moved to
Hokkaido
University
as a full
professor of Research Institute for Electronic Science. He is also a guest
professor of
University
of
Tokyo
, Department of
Chemistry and Biotechnology. He was a visiting research associate from 1995 to
1996 with Professor M. Reza Ghadiri at the Scripps Research Institute in the
United States
.
His research is mainly focused on the synthesis of photochromic macrocycles and
photo-responsive molecular organizations and polymers. He is also in tackling
the synthesis of a new photo-responsive compound that activates the molecular
function of motor proteins instead of ATP.
